Any suggestions for leopard skin???

Ive been working on some 10mm Numidian cavalry.  They most likely had cow, ox, elephant, and even leopard skin hide shields.

Ive had pretty good luck painting the cow and ox hides, but Im really struggling on the leopard skins.  THEY LOOK LIKE DAMN CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!!!  Do any of you have any suggestions, either on color choice, or technique?  Thanks for looking!

  1. I've done a leopard skin on 1/72 figures.
This is how I did it:
    - First I painted the skin white
    - Then I painted them yellow leaving a border of white
    - Then I painted dark brown dots in groups of four on several places
    - I finished it with a sepia wash

I don't know if this can work on 10 mm figures. I would suggest that you do a test before you paint them all.
