Small Historicon 'review'

I got a chance to go up to Historicon on Friday this year.  So, I packed up my stuff (one backpack with clothes, the other empty for toys!) and headed to Old Dominion.

I didnt take a ton of pictures - I left my camera in my room (which was a hotel room in downtown Fredricksburg) which left me with my ipad.  Out of the pictures I did take, only a small few actually turned out decently.

First up - since this was a Civil War themed Historicon this year, there were ton of ACW games and 'stuff'.  These first two pics are a table that depicts Little Big Top...the pictures dont do this one justice.  The terrain was absolutely incredible.

Next up was a Fallujah (I think) game.  I got to take pics of this one before the gamers got their grubby little hands on it :)  Comes complete with a 'Falafel House'!

Finally, couple random ACW tables - the first is a pic of Picketts Charge (Emmitsburg Road in the middle) and the next pic is of a game of Piquet that I was really interested in.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Historicon this year.  I went to my first Historicon back in 2010 at the Host in Pennsylvania, and in my opinion, this one in Fredericksburg blew that one away.  The vendor hall (the main reason I went) was enormous (big enough to rival Salute's vendor hall!) while the main game hall, and extra gaming rooms were right there all attached to each other.  It was the perfect venue for a convention like this (not to mention closer to my house :) )

My haul spread out over the floor when I got home today

My biggest purchase was probably a ton of Battlestar Galactica stuff (you can see some of the base stars and Pegasus in the last picture) from Fox Miniatures.  I had seen the stuff 3 years ago, and always regretted not getting it....rectified this year!  Also, some preorders from Rebel Minis and Eurka, as well as a shit ton of bases from Battlefront (seen at the top right).

Biggest Surprise - this one has to be Splintered Light Miniatures for me.  I wanted to check out their fantasy 15s just for shits and giggles, and I came away with some Trolls, Orcs, Goblins, as well as several packs of historical Vikings.  Here is a pic of the trolls, which has moved up the list on to my painting table
and some orks
Oh well - hard to make out the pic of the orks, but they look really really good.

Another vendor who I cant really classify as a surprise is Age Of Glory.  They are carrying all the Empress line, Crusader minis, Red Star, and Imprint vehicles (of which I got a T90 and an Abrams - EXPENSIVE models, but they are totally perfect representations of those tanks at 1/56 scale).  I dont know the gentleman's name who (I think) owns AOG, but he is always really nice, and more than happy to help.

Eureka is always great, and you always know what you are getting.  GHQ seems to always bring their entire inventory, and they had a 10% off sale.

However, the BIGGEST surprise of all was the lack of BO!!!  Hurray for gamers!  Rejoice!  I only caught a whiff of BO one time, and that was at the very end of the day, and one of the fellas who had been running games all day.  Not to mention, it was H O T in Old Dominion this weekend - went I went to bed at 11 Friday night, it was 90 (32C).

Biggest Disappointment - is the dude that runs 1-94 Enterprises.  I had placed a preorder with him a couple weeks back -he said 'no problem'.  I walked up to his stand, said 'hey, I placed a preorder with you' and he said 'well, what did you want?  I cant keep up with everything people want'  Just struck me as kinda shitty....ok, tell me you dont take preorders.  Or tell me you forgot to pack it up.  Dont blame ME for coming up to your booth.  I contemplated telling the guy to go fuck himself, and I actually walked off, but I needed the decals and I eventually went back and got what I needed.  I dont know the guys name, but he was an old dude who reminded me of my shitty grandfather.  That was my last dealing with this ding dong - I can get decals other places.

Some cool games that I saw
A Battlestar Galactica game by Jim Fox that really captured the spirit of the reimagined series.

A new set of rules on the way called This Is Not a Test which reminded me of Necromunda, but set in a near future apocalyptic Earth.

Several different periods of Piquet Field Of Battle which really seems to be on track with ACW and Napoleonic combat.

A board game called 'Zombies!!!' that looked like a lot of fun.

One game that I was hoping for more out of was GHQs Micro Squad - it seemed slow, with lots of counters and chits, and the terrain board was 'meh' at best.  Im not ready to write this off yet, but its teetering on the brink.

So, there ya have it.  Every time I go to a convention, its like a 40 year old kid in the candy store or on Christmas morning.  Soooo much to see and buy!  If you have never been to Historicon, you need to give it a shot one of these days!
